Other WASC publications

One of the most active areas of the society is the publication of philatelic literature, ranging from definitive handbooks on major subjects down to monographs on very specialised topics. A number of WASC publications are available to download free of charge and where relevany are listed under the relevant country in the 'resources' pages of this website. The WASC Book 'West African Post Office Impression Books' by P. Beale, J. Martin, and F. Walton, now out of print, contains images of postmarks, taken from cancellers supplied by the Post Office to West African countries, between 1862 and the early 1960s. While the record is not complete (many records were destroted by bombing during the Second World war), the book illustrates almost 2000 cancels. There is a handy index at the back.

PO Archives and early postal history of W Africa by Philip Beale 1972 (10pp) explores records of announcements, postal rates etc held in the London GPO archives. 1855 postage rates UK to West Africa provides a one page summary of rates.
